This is all quite easy to resolve, remembering that religion is made up of 4 things that sometimes never legitimately intersect.

1. God. Whomever he or she or they may be.

2. Scripture. In the case of Christians, a book that has been altered by the hand of man intentionally and unintentionally tens of thousands of times in the 1800 years since the originals were lost.

3. Dogma, the interpretation of our highly modified scriptures....based almost entirely on the existing social and cultural environment of the person reading them.

4. The Church - a club of people who have all landed on the same dogma.

In this light, we realize that people believe what they already believed, and use the scriptures, and the dogma to justify it.

And then they all get together in a Church, and reassure each other they're all completely right with their beliefs.
